What is Wifi & Networking?
Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity is a technology that allows devices like computers, smartphones and tablets to connect to the internet or communicate with one another wirelessly within a certain range ie the home or your garden.
How it Works: Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data between devices and a router, which is usually connected to the internet. Devices equipped with a Wi-Fi receiver can detect the signal from a Wi-Fi router and connect to it, enabling access to the network.
Frequencies: Wi-Fi typically operates on two frequency bands, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band offers a longer range but lower speed, while the 5 GHz band offers higher speed but a shorter range.
Security: Wi-Fi networks are secured using encryption protocols like WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2) to prevent unauthorised access.
Networking: Networking refers to the interconnection of multiple devices to enable them to communicate, share resources and access the internet.
Networking Devices: Router: Directs data between different networks, such as between your home network and the internet.
Switch: Connects devices within a LAN, managing data traffic to ensure it reaches its correct destination.
Modem: Converts data from a digital format, used by a computer, into a format suitable for a transmission medium so it can be transmitted and received over the internet.
Access Point: A device that allows other Wi-Fi-enabled devices to connect to a wired network.
